Project Aims

Community
With the Town Fund Deal and Cumberland Council making available 100% of the capital expenditure to design and build the facilities, the project represents a once-in-a generation opportunity to create a positive change for the clubs, and to deliver sustainable engagement to promote wellbeing for the wider community. Cumberland Council working in conjunction with Workington AFC and Workington Town RLFC will develop the Cumberland Sports Village scheme in Workington.
Improved Sports Facilities – Provide modern, state of the art, playing facilities to replace the clubs outdated and deteriorating stadia for the benefit of both the clubs and the wider community of Workington and the West Cumbria area.
Commercial Support – CSV will support the aspiration for both clubs to progress up their respect leagues in terms of both the ground grading requirements, and the opportunity to explore a wider range of commercial opportunities with the aim of ensuring that both clubs, and CSV, have a profitable and sustainable future.
Health in the Community – The development will be a sustainable, high quality, inclusive and accessible scheme. The facilities will serve as a community hub, which will seek, using sport, to help tackle the key societal issues that the area faces. This integrated approach supports and builds on the ethos of both clubs who have strong, successful community programmes.
All Weather Playing Surface – The demand for high quality all weather playing facilities in the town will not be met solely through the stadium pitch. To further support and enhance the community offering an all-weather community pitch will be built in the area between Borough Park and the Leisure Centre
The community pitch will be made possible with a grant provided by the Football Foundation and will run alongside the development of the stadium and will be managed by Cumberland Sports Village Ltd upon completion.

In addition to the sporting activities taking place the facilities will seek to be a focal point for both the community and business within the area. The enhanced hospitality offering the development provides means the facilities can also be hired out for meetings, functions, community groups and all other host of activities.
